The Wedding BardSinging, dancing, feasting and audience participation! Traditional Jewish Klezmer music meets clowning with a modern twist. Allan Merovitz’s The Wedding Bard recreates a traditional Jewish wedding replete with satire, social commentary, songs and storytelling. The performance weaves together ritual and spectacle, providing the audience with a unique combination of learning and fun. As the “badchan”, master of ceremonies / wedding clown / musician, Merovitz leads the audience through the wedding ceremony. The badchan figure was prolific throughout Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, from the middle ages to the end of the last century. The performance brings audience members to their feet. Everyone has a role to play in this wedding…as a glowing bride, hapless groom, weeping aunt, drunk uncle or other member of the wedding party. The audience takes part in the entire wedding ceremony, including dancing and food (Glatt Koser). Written and produced by Merovitz, The Wedding Bard explores the significance of the celebration that joins people into families and communities. For bookings: |
